Pantherophis

Pantherophis guttatus, the Corn Snake

The Corn Snake belongs to the taxonomical Family Colubridae and within this to the extremely large Subfamily known as Colubrinae. Formerly the corn snake was considered, as a rat snake, part of the excessively comprehensive genus Elaphe, but an old genus, Pantherophis, very recently was resurrected for North American rat snakes due to phylogenetic research (Utiger, Urs, Notker Helfenberger, Beat Schätti, Catherine Schmidt, Markus Ruf and Vincent Ziswiler (2002) "Molecular systematics and phylogeny of Old World and New World ratsnakes, Elaphe Auct., and related genera (Reptilia, Squamata, Colubridae)." Russ. J. Herpetol. 9 (2): 105-124). The genus Pantherophis now includes the former Elaphe guttata, Elaphe emoryi, Elaphe obsoleta, Elaphe vulpina and Elaphe bairdi, with their subspecies.
Pantherophis guttatus can be loosely translated as "speckled leopard snake" (Greek panthera = spotted cat, leopard + ophis = snake; and Latin guttatus, from gutta = drop, speck).

Polka

Polka

When Polka hatched in Rebecca's home, Lycina stated that she had to have the little white snake with dots born to all orange parents with stripes (this is a pun, for those who may wonder: her parents are both sunglow stripes and that they had different hets in them was unknown until the babies hatched). So here she is, a "snow motley", that is homozygous for amelanism, anerythrism and motley. She was born in 2008 and bred by Rebecca Purdom.
